Genesis 1:3-5
God spoke and it came to be. There was light We would note that there are yet no light-giving bodies. The NIV Study Bible notes that this light enables us to perceive the rest of his creation, and gives life. It is God speaking to us that brings light and life. He still calls for light, and those who hear and allow his voice to work in them are filled with light and life, and pass on light and life.
But what is described here is not merely metaphor for what God does on an ongoing basis. This is a critical point. I said yesterday that what we find here is not history or science as we usually understand them, but there was a beginning, as red saucer notes. We don’t understand the particulars of that – whether God’s days were 24 hour days or seasons of development doesn’t matter. The point is it happened, and still happens, because there is a God who willed it, and spoke these realities into being. Why? We will see that he was preparing a place for a people to love, a people who would be his image in mirroring his light-giving love in their daily lives. But I’m jumping way ahead.
Prayer:
God, thank you that you purposed to bring about what we see and know. What are we doing with it? Amen.

"God saw that the light was good...." I've seen this so many times that i've come take it for granted, this, and it's reiteration over the next 5 acts of creation, until finally we come to "...it was very good."
What does it mean? We have a bunch of actions, and in the middle of these acts of god, we have a value statement: "God saw that the light was good". Isn't obvious that something god created is good?
I think God may have been setting out a pattern of worship-full life. We receive the action of God and acknowledge its goodness in every way we can. I hope it's obvious to my wife and children that I love them, but I still need to tell them. Perhaps by stating what is obvious, God is setting out for us the health and beauty of making sure we acknowledg and celebrate what is good at every opportunity.
